A preset keeps everything: wall size, depths, waves (with the image), calibration, box letters. Presets are stored in this browser; save them as a file to keep them safe or move them to another computer.

The pattern is fixed to the wall, so when you grow it every existing box keeps its depths and waves and its letter. New boxes get the next letters. Each wave is marked with its box letter and fin number, e.g. C07. On the side you grow, the edge waves (C) are replaced by between-box waves (B).

Print the code on each wave (small raised dots on the side)

Assembly order: 1. build each box with glue, screws and its 4 combs. 2. tape the spacers (cross, T, L) to the back edges of the boxes. 3. set the boxes against the room wall, bottom row first, and push the U-clips on from behind as you go. 4. anchor the top row to the room wall (printed anchors or metal straps), before anything else goes in. 5. from the front: push the fins in until they stop in the back combs, then click in the drawers (their rim covers the front ends of the fins), then the waves last. To take a box apart, reverse: waves first.

Wall spacers and top anchors

Printed spacers between the back of the boxes and the room wall. Seen from behind they follow the wood exactly: a cross where 4 boxes meet, a T where 2 boxes meet on the edge of the wall, an L at the outer corners. Each arm is as thick as the wood it sits on (double where two boxes touch), so nothing sticks out. They are taped to the back edges of the boxes, not to the room wall.

Top row anchoring

Gap: must fit a U-clip (23 mm) plus your fingers. Arm length: measured from the joint; arms stop before the U-clips. Anchors: on the top row only; a lip goes over the box top and is screwed into the side walls, a foot is screwed into the room wall with plugs. The spacers only hold the distance; the anchors hold the wall.

Calibration

Measure first, then fine-tune the fit after a test print. Start with the defaults.

Fin plywood, measured (mm)

Measure the 4 mm plywood for the fins with calipers. It is rarely exactly 4.0. The comb slots follow this number.

Floor plywood, measured (mm)

Measure the 6 mm plywood for the well floors. The slot at the back of each drawer follows this number.

Comb slot play (mm)

Extra room in each comb slot so the fin slides in by hand. Fin too tight: add 0.1. Fin wobbles: take away 0.1.

Drawer side gap (mm)

Gap on each side between drawer and fin. The small bumps on the drawer close this gap and hold it tight. Drawer too hard to push: add 0.1. Drawer rattles: take away 0.1.

Drawer click (mm)

Height of the small ridge on the front combs. The drawer rides over it and drops into a groove, so it clicks home and cannot creep out. No click: add 0.1. Too hard to pull out: take away 0.1. 0 = no click.

Drawer click play (mm)

Extra room in the drawer groove around the ridge. Every printer makes small ridges and grooves a little different. Drawer does not drop in fully at the end, or stays tight: add 0.1. Drawer moves back and forth a little when home: take away 0.1.

Felt under drawer foot (mm)

Thickness of the self-adhesive felt or rubber you stick under the foot at the back of each drawer. It stops the back of the drawer from buzzing. The foot is printed shorter by this much, so the drawer stays level; from 1 mm up it gets a pocket that holds the felt. 0 = no felt.

Box wall plywood, measured (mm)

Measure the 12 mm plywood of the box walls. The U-clips that join the boxes at the back are sized from it.

Box joint play (mm)

Extra room inside each U-clip. Clip too hard to push on: add 0.1. Boxes can move: take away 0.1.

Wave clip length (mm)

How deep the wave clips go into the box. The drawer side bars sit just behind them.

How to calibrate

Measure both plywoods and type the numbers above.
Export the test pieces below: one complete front comb (2 end pieces + 1 middle), one back comb end piece, two waves, the shortest drawer, both U-clips and a wall spacer.
Slide a fin into the comb, clip the waves onto a fin and push the drawer between two fins until it clicks.
Change the play by 0.1 and print again until it fits.
